Nicki James Shepherd is a Computing Lecturer at Burnley College University Centre and an applied researcher in artificial intelligence and education. He holds a Master of Research (MRes) in Artificial Intelligence and is the author of eight peer-reviewed publications spanning AI, cyber security, and law.
Background
Nicki’s career bridges software engineering and higher education. Before moving into teaching, he worked as a software engineer across government, the public sector, and private industry, building production systems and solving real-world technical problems. That industry grounding shapes how he teaches today, connecting computing theory to the practical skills employers actually look for.
Today he combines lecturing with an active research programme, writing and publishing on the questions that sit at the intersection of computing, artificial intelligence, and the people those technologies affect.
Teaching
As a Computing Lecturer at Burnley College University Centre, Nicki teaches across higher-level computing programmes, with a focus on programming, artificial intelligence, cyber security, and software engineering. Research
Nicki’s research focuses on artificial intelligence in education. His current work examines generative AI and large language models in teaching and learning, adaptive and intelligent tutoring systems, and the use of AI to support disabled students in UK higher education. He is undertaking a PhD by publication in AI and education, building on a growing body of peer-reviewed work that also reaches into cyber security and law.
